SALT IS OUR ELEMENT

THE FORMATION OF THE SALT LAYERS

More than 250 million years ago, salt deposits formed from parts of the primordial sea that were separated from the ocean by movements of the Earth’s crust. Due to intense sunlight, the water gradually evaporated, leaving behind sediments. These still form the valuable raw material for this vital mineral today: salt. Without salt, there would be no life.

The rock salt of K+S is mined at depths of 500–800 meters. The deposits are completely dry and gas-tight. In addition, salt is plastic. This creates a perfect environment for the disposal of waste. Over time, the salt encloses the waste, and it has no connection to the biosphere.

This creates the geological foundation on which the underground disposal is built.
